Spilled Whine Episode 23
We here at Spilled Whine are pleased to offer you this very special episode. A fine upstanding young man by the name of Donald from the Central Florida Future, the UCF campus newspaper, interviews us about our humble podcast. We have to be honest: his adroit and far-ranging questions catch us off guard. We hope to be playful, tricky, to turn the tables on our interlocutor, to mix and shake (not stir) things up, as is our wont. But listen as we become trapped in the headlights of the piercing gaze of our interviewer. Instead of trickery and subversion, we end up on our best behavior, and attempt to answer his questions seriously and considerately, devoid of sarcasm or malevolence. We promise, zaniness and anarchy shall resume shortly. Meanwhile, witness us in our straightedge mode.
Some topics covered:
- The present and future state of podcasting: We are completely unequipped to answer this question.
- The deep dark past of podcasting: Apparently the term has been around for not much more than two years or so. We mention the old MTV VJ Adam Curry as the original podcaster, though this status is disputed. I believe Downtown Julie Brown to be behind the anti-Curry propaganda.
- We’re asked to rattle off some of our favorite podcasts (other than our own, of course). I plug Christopher Lydon and Open Source, currently on hiatus from the airwaves but still delivering on downloadable interviews (If you visit the Open Source site, you can find a summer reading discussion on a few of the essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson, led by some Open Source community members, including myself under the name mynocturama. It went strong for a while, then kind of fizzled. Why read when you have YouTube and Halo?) I also list The Philosopher’s Zone from Australia, in my ongoing desperate attempt to seem smart. Tom plugs The Naked Scientists and This Week in Tech, and Teresa throws a nod to Ricky Gervais and his immensely popular podcast (we’re a close second, trust us).
- And some of the wines we drink while whining on Spilled Whine: Tom, despite his Catholic upbringing, is lethally drawn to The Seven Deadly Zins, while I, in my infinite gnarliness, give my love to Gnarly Head, and Teresa to her beloved Guenoc.
Finally, we’d like to give our thanks to Donald and the Central Florida Future for even bothering with our poor excuse for a podcast.
